RECENT ACTIVITY

Sri Lanka is reeling under the second wave of Covid-19 that is sweeping across the country. Cases are springing up everywhere, even in the heart of Colombo.

A staggering 20 percent of all children in Sri Lanka have some form of mental or physical disability. Despite disability being an ever-increasing problem in the country, it is often regarded as an unapproachable subject.

Our Urgent Needs

Monthly running costs are more than one million rupees when taking into account day to day needs such as meals, salaries, electricity, water and shortfall on food that is not covered by donations. Additional funds are urgently required for maintenance and upgrading of infrastructure.

Currently our urgent needs are:

  • A van – Transport is required to visit health clinics and hospitals and to go for classes and outings at various locations. The van we have is in bad shape, constantly needing costly repairs. We urgently require the donation of a new van or funds to purchase a new van, which can be refitted to accommodate wheelchairs and ramps.
  • Upgrading the activity centre - Many of the residents spend their mornings drawing, sewing, making jewellery and flowers and doing other crafts at the activity centre. However the centre is housed in an old building in dire need of refurbishment and improvement, so that residents can be more comfortable when doing their activities.

  • Modernizing cottages - The cottages need to be upgraded with a coat of paint, new furniture and furnishings so the residents have a cheerful and pleasant place to live. The toilets need to be improved as well.
  • New female cottage - At the moment the female residents are crowded into two cottages with just two housemothers to look after several of them in each one. By building a new female cottage, they will more space as well as additional care. The Home will also be able to accommodate more female residents.
